One of the best places in Iowa to adopt from! I have adopted both a ca and a rabbit here over the years, just adopted the rabbit today. I highly recommend them to anyone. It is a very professional and clean environment, friendly and knowledgeable staff and seamless adoption process with reasonable adoption fees. If you're looking for your next pet, please check them out!

Please proceed with caution when adopting from the ARL. My family and I adopted an amazing dog October 31, 2024. Once we got Chico home we realized he had hip issues, he couldn’t use the restroom properly, sit properly, and would whine in pain. Our vet stated he needs a double hip replacement at a little over a year old. This is a 8k - 14k surgery. The vet stated there is no way this condition was not known prior to adoption or while he was being cleared to be neutered. The condition was not disclosed to us by the ARL. When I contacted them they advised to me to fill out a medical assistance form. I received an automated response a few moments later stating their assistance program does not cover surgery at this time, this made it seem like they just wanted to get me off of the phone. I called the ARL again and was told a supervisor would review my case. I was contacted a few days later and told we could surrender the pet back with no guarantees he would be able to be adopted back to us. Without trying to throw my opinion in the situation, this sounds to me like they planned on putting him down if surrendered back. I offered to pay a portion of the surgery and the ARL declined this as an option. Our family has bonded with this dog and feel as though we were set up to fail. He’s a lovable, happy dog who deserves the best care. We did not expect to adopt a pet and be told within 3 weeks he needed major and expensive surgery. We wish the ARL would help us or give us options but that is not the case. Unfortunately, I am unsure if this is a common issue but would want people to proceed with caution.

Owning cats has been my lifelong dream, and after moving to Iowa my boyfriend and I decided it was time! We went to ARL and met Hazelnut (formerly known as Naomi) and Sage (formerly known as Nadia). The two kittens were alone, not a bonded pair, but we decided to go on a limb and adopt the two of them together to give them both a chance at a new home. It's been 3 days and they're the best of friends and complete and total sweethearts. We love these two so so much and are so happy we chose this shelter to adopt from. The adoption staff were also extremely knowledgeable and their policies extremely fair and friendly to a new pet parents such as myself. Thank you ARL for helping us pick the best new additions to our family!

An absolutely disgusting institution who are all-too-eager to put an animal down despite no record of harm or violence, simply because the animal MIGHT be reactive and need therapy and training beyond the show-dog common training for things such as commands to sit in a calm environment. And the staff, the whole time, walk around with a "mine doesn't stink because I work with animals" attitude. While I'm sure there are some in the staff with kind hearts who want to help animals, the institution overall is disgusting and horrid, and by-and-large should be ashamed of themselves. The manner in which they conduct themselves is almost deliberately misleading, with a disregard for actual long-term care or compassion for animals. If they don't act and look like they would fit with "Wings of an Angel" playing as a camera panned over them, then the "experts" at the ARL, as an institution, seem to have no actual interest in compassionate treatment and care for such animals. Shameful and disgusting.
