Please proceed with caution when adopting from the ARL. My family and I adopted an amazing dog October 31, 2024. Once we got Chico home we realized he had hip issues, he couldn’t use the restroom properly, sit properly, and would whine in pain. Our vet stated he needs a double hip replacement at a little over a year old. This is a 8k - 14k surgery. The vet stated there is no way this condition was not known prior to adoption or while he was being cleared to be neutered. The condition was not disclosed to us by the ARL. When I contacted them they advised to me to fill out a medical assistance form. I received an automated response a few moments later stating their assistance program does not cover surgery at this time, this made it seem like they just wanted to get me off of the phone. I called the ARL again and was told a supervisor would review my case. I was contacted a few days later and told we could surrender the pet back with no guarantees he would be able to be adopted back to us. Without trying to throw my opinion in the situation, this sounds to me like they planned on putting him down if surrendered back. I offered to pay a portion of the surgery and the ARL declined this as an option. Our family has bonded with this dog and feel as though we were set up to fail. He’s a lovable, happy dog who deserves the best care. We did not expect to adopt a pet and be told within 3 weeks he needed major and expensive surgery. We wish the ARL would help us or give us options but that is not the case. Unfortunately, I am unsure if this is a common issue but would want people to proceed with caution.

Owning cats has been my lifelong dream, and after moving to Iowa my boyfriend and I decided it was time! We went to ARL and met Hazelnut (formerly known as Naomi) and Sage (formerly known as Nadia). The two kittens were alone, not a bonded pair, but we decided to go on a limb and adopt the two of them together to give them both a chance at a new home. It's been 3 days and they're the best of friends and complete and total sweethearts. We love these two so so much and are so happy we chose this shelter to adopt from. The adoption staff were also extremely knowledgeable and their policies extremely fair and friendly to a new pet parents such as myself. Thank you ARL for helping us pick the best new additions to our family!

An absolutely disgusting institution who are all-too-eager to put an animal down despite no record of harm or violence, simply because the animal MIGHT be reactive and need therapy and training beyond the show-dog common training for things such as commands to sit in a calm environment. And the staff, the whole time, walk around with a "mine doesn't stink because I work with animals" attitude. While I'm sure there are some in the staff with kind hearts who want to help animals, the institution overall is disgusting and horrid, and by-and-large should be ashamed of themselves. The manner in which they conduct themselves is almost deliberately misleading, with a disregard for actual long-term care or compassion for animals. If they don't act and look like they would fit with "Wings of an Angel" playing as a camera panned over them, then the "experts" at the ARL, as an institution, seem to have no actual interest in compassionate treatment and care for such animals. Shameful and disgusting.

Be careful ARL staffers! I love you dearly! We all make mistakes in life. Dabbling in literal voodoo for clicks and funding instead of utilizing more honorable fundraising tactics are displays of hating our bretheren! Take the high road!

We adopted Kaia fka Ghost yesterday 01/14/2025. The staff at the ARL were busy but, nonetheless very helpful. Answering all the questions we had the best they could. The process went smooth and was easy as could be. Kaia has settled in so well with us and is such a sweet girl!

We adopted a 11 week old kitten from the ARL, because we wanted a companion for the kitten we rescued 4 weeks earlier. We gave her a bath a few hours after we had brought her home, and we discovered that she was infected with fleas. It's very frustrating that as new pet owners, and after communicating that there was another kitten in our home, that they did not give us any type of warning about the fleas. They said she passed her vet check a few days prior. and I'm angry that the ARL would not have a control or knowledge on fleas infecting their animals. We now have to treat our rescued kitten and rid our home of fleas. We feel so sad for the adopted kitten that came home with fleas. It makes me think about how many other animals are suffering from a flea infection at the ARL

I recently adopted a male kitten (Vila) from the ARL Main location, but unfortunately had to return the kitten today 11/10/24 due to allergies that I developed. My experience with the employee (older male, do not know his name) who assisted me with the return was extremely disappointing and frustrating.Despite being aware of my allergy issues, this employee repeatedly asked me to carry and touch the kitten, even though there were other staff members in the room available to assist. This was not only inconsiderate but also made my allergy symptoms worse. I had taken medication beforehand, but it was unreasonable for him to put me in that position when other help was available.Additionally, the employee, an older male, was very dismissive and cold when I attempted to express my concerns about the kitten. He interrupted me multiple times and showed no empathy or warmth, which is surprising and disheartening from someone working at an animal shelter. The lack of professionalism and respect for my well-being was extremely disappointing.I sincerely hope ARL takes this feedback seriously, as such interactions reflect poorly on the organization and the compassionate care that should be at the heart of animal welfare.

My brother adopted a pup back in april, the dog isn't suitable for my small house/ the apartment he's moving to and the dog is just very high energy. They will not take the dog back and told us they will euthanize him if they did, some 'rescue', huh? They want to kill this dog just because he is acting his breed..didn't even meet him once, diagnosed him with separation anxiety over the phone and deemed him unrehabable. Now I'm stuck figuring it out because I won't let this dog die because he has alot of energy..

A Place that's great to add a new member to your family. Just noted that if your looking to adopt a dog make sure you bring any you currently live with for a meet and greet. Or you'll have to reschedule a meet and greet and that's no guaranty that they'll still need there as they don't hold animals for people

In memory of Rambo, adopted 15 years ago from ARL, we lost him July 13th this year. So much love and joy this big boy brought with him. My hiking buddy all those years, best dog ever!!❤️

Went to adopt a cat, and the lady in the front standing in the lobby was extremely rude. Brown hair lady and younger, (this happened today at 3:30 p.m.) and just standing there and told me she didn’t “have time,” to show me the kitten I was interested in in the other building. So sad, we were so excited to adopt, and we left crushed. She wasn’t doing anything either except just standing there.. she was extremely rude, and was also blantantly ignoring us.Later, asked if we could get a couple dogs out to walk them and she said “no, we don’t have time for this.” I feel bad for the animals there because of her.

Me and my boyfriend got a dog from here. Come to find out she had kennel cough and a double ear infection. Staff wouldn’t answer calls and still hasn’t sent us any of her records! Didn’t give her a vaccination that she needed and left us to pay for it with a 2 days notice. I wish i would’ve known this place was like this. I would recommend going to the Ames Animal shelter for an animal!

The kids and I love visiting the animal rescue league. We actually go every year the week of my birthday to see the animals and make a donation. If you want to check out the second and ranch barn you do have to reach out and contact them before going out there. We were able to walk around the barn and Ella found a rooster she fell in love with, we will be adopting him this week so excited!!!

TLDR; The ARL is a deceitful organization, with zero remorse. The lack of communication between staff is heartbreaking. My parents found a small, lost puppy and brought her to the ARL to determine if she was chipped and receive preliminary medical assistance. They were told the ARL couldn't view the animal without her being surrendered - this should have immediately been a red flag. My parents felt forced into surrendering her and then later, made to feel guilty about doing so.My parents told the ARL that they wanted the original owners, who had lost this puppy, to have the opportunity to come forward and claim her. However, my parents were adamant that they wanted to adopt this puppy if the owner didn't come forward; they had come to love the puppy during their short time with her. The ARL told my parents that they would contact them as soon as the puppy was available. At this time, the ARL never stated that the puppy was going to be put into foster care nor made available for adoption. My mother was so enamored with this puppy and worried about her wellbeing, that she called the ARL nearly every day to check-in on her condition. She even made sure that this wouldn't be too bothersome to the staff - they, once again, assured her that it wouldn't be a problem. The staff told her repeatedly that (1) the puppy was doing well and (2) my parents were the first ones on the list for her adoption. Simply put, every single staff member LIED to my parents. The ARL told my parents that the puppy was too young to adopt, but after about 8 weeks (and her spay appointment) she would be available. After this conversation, my parents purchased $500+ of puppy food, toys, materials, etc. They even began the process of establishing new veterinary care closer to their home. When my mother called to check-in about 1.5 weeks away from this timeline as suggested by the ARL, she was told that, "the puppy was no longer in the ARL's care." The staff alluded that this puppy was being kept by the foster family and/or already adopted by someone else. I strongly feel that the ARL had never had any intention of giving my parents the opportunity to adopt her.The biggest disappointments in this organization are as follows: (1) guilting individuals for bringing in lost animals, (2) lying about their adoption processes, and (3) zero communication between staff.I will not be adopting nor fostering with this organization ever again.

I was in a emergency situation where I had to give up my pets immediately. I tried to get the ARL to help but was told that I would have to wait 11-14 days before I get a interview just to talk about surrendering them. I'm currently in a intensive inpatient PTSD course provided by the American Lake VA Hospital in Washington State. I was given 4 days to find homes for my dogs (kids) and the best that they can do is 11-14 days. Unacceptable this is a emergency situation for me and my pets who I'm not wanting to give up but have to in order for me to have a somewhat normal life. There's only 2 things that matter in life to me 1. My dogs. 2. My health. That's it and me being homeless with 4 pets is not a option. The ARL should be called "The when and if we want to help you animal rescue league."

Just WOW! The staff was so patient with me as I shuffled back and forth between kittens on display waiting to be adopted. Spent a total of two days looking for my new best friend. Just as I thought one was already adopted, she was still there the next morning. Nala (previously known as Lola) ended up coming home with me. It was clear her and I were meant to be from the first time we met in the play room. I am so lucky to have her. Thank you to all the staff at ARL who assisted me in finding my new best friend!

I have dealt with the ARL for a number of years and it seems like as the years go by the complaints are getting more and more I am now not living in a home anymore or an apartment and I have five cats and I'm 61 years old and my cats don't deserve this I have a blind cat with no eyes and for other cats plus a kitten so for adult cats in one kitten living in a car I was thinking I'm taking my kids to the ARL for crisis time and have them hang on to my cats until I am in a house or an apartment because like I said I'm just right now but reading all of these reviews I don't think I'm going to take my cats there it's very frustrating to know a place that is supposed to take care of the animals and help the general public with their animals that their staff is very very inconsiderate I think I am going to find somewhere else to take my animals my animals are my family and if Tom C. Had any heart in him he would take care of these problems but on the other hand out of sight out of mind hmmmm

So my wife got a dog from the arl and it killed a cat that attacked her.the police at the Arl made her sign a paper stating the dog was a danger to the public my wife doing the right thing surrendered the dog back to the arl, they took the dog put it back in there website 4 hrs later and resold the dog bot stating the dog was high risk. But are still bringing charges against my wife! Seems pretty shady to me!!!

Awful experience at the SE 14th location with my grandkids today. We were looking for a dog and see some outside in cages. No signs what so ever!! So we assume it’s ok to just look but of course know, common sense, not to touch the dogs! A red headed lady named Alexis comes out and VERY rudely says “who gave you permission to be out here you cannot be out here” my son told her she didn’t need to be rude and could have simply told us. She tried saying “that’s what I said. But that is absolutely not how she approached us or how she said it at all. There should be signs above the doors saying staff or something to that effect if it’s a “safety issue” as she claimed. She immediately went to the girl at the front desk and that person was shaking her head and rolling her eyes also. Customer service needs to be a training point at this location!

The ARL's food pantry has saved my butt a couple times- thank you! Helping animals find homes and families- and then helping provide resources for those families stay together is truly good work🩷

You guys are completely full. And want to charge to much money for a dog that is 6 months to 6 years. When I can get a puppy for less than that. Why do you think that you are full. Because it cost more to rescue then it does to get a puppy.

Thank you for a great experience with so many great animals. We are so happy to have met and found a home for Maverick.

The arl has the responsibility of cremating my son's cat after it had to be euthanized. They ended disregarding what was on the paperwork and had him burnt with other animals so we were unable to get his ashes back. Shame on you arl.

We adopted this beautiful rooster named Matt. He is the sweetest boy! He was seized from a fighting ring sometimes you never know what you're going to get. He loves to be held and as you can tell that is my six-year-old son holding him he is not aggressive whatsoever we love him. Now for the ARL this place was beautiful they helped us out in every way that they could super sweet girls working there beautiful gift shop an area for you to play with a dog or have some quiet time with the cat and then right across the street is the barn and they are very well maintained beautiful horses and roosters and a pig named petunia

Everyone here is so friendly and has a true love of animals. All my pets have been adoptees from the ARL and I've had nothing but good experiences. If you're considering a pet, please adopt! They have so many sweet animals and no one will share your excitement more than the staff and volunteers at the ARL!

The adoption process was quick and easy. Plus the ARL has some great programs for anybody who is looking for a new pet, we have adopted 2 cats using the rent a cat program. For 2 months you get to have a cat, at least 8 months old or more, in your home to see if they are a happy and enjoyable match for you and then at the end you pay a small fee and the cat is yours, it's great for families who aren't sure, meanwhile the cat is still the ARL's and if there are any health problems etc the cats entire vet bill is covered.

How do I even start to explain what I have went thru due to this non profit 🤣🤣 organization! About 6 months ago my boyfriend and I had contacted them to help us with what I thought was our reactive American bulldog, she at this point was very spradically showing signs of aggression. They more or less told us not our problem. We went to the facility, in tears, to surrender her. The lady was absolutely rude! I had to leave the building, because I was already in a hightened emotional state, and I didn't want to act unprofessional. The following couple days she actually bit my boyfriend and I. Causing some pretty intense damage. The emergency room contacted animal control. They then went out on a head hunt for my dog. Leaving notes on my former roommates door and calling him numerous times. They finally reached us on our phone numbers stating they were at our residents to take our dog! Had your unprofessional rude employee done their job, and let us surrender her we would not be having this conversation. I told them to carry on with their day, that our dog was staying with us. I will say there is an animal control officer by the name of Madison that actually cares about her job and the animals she helps.Unfortunately our babies aggression outbreaks were only increasing in intensity and aggression. One evening my sister was visiting and she had an outburst. She demanded that I surrender my baby. That it was not safe. The gentleman came to get her, and we discussed what the options were. All he seem to push for was for her to be put to sleep. But said it was our opinion. But as he explained she would be put to sleep right away. So no the case. We said we wanted to be notified when she was so we could see about having her ashes returned to us. My boyfriend had to call them. And their non profit organization told us $400 for a private cremation with the return of her ashes. $100 for group cremation and spread them with other dogs. And no way would they give us her body to bury in a family members yard. They NEVER CALLED TO ASK us ANYTHING, so tell me, what did they do with my dog since I didn't get to spend almost my entire months rent on cremation? Did they throw her away like some trash??I am already struggling emotionally with the situation in a whole, and their non profit non compassion organization only made matter worse! I will never even consider looking to them for adoption!! Or even help with anything to do with an animal. To me they organization DOES NOT EXIST!

Dear ARL of Iowa,We are so appreciative for all you have done to help our baby Galaxy during this hard time for all of us since he had to get his tail amputated and we were not able to afford this surgery. Thank you for showing so much compassion and sympathy towards him. We are so grateful you were responsive with this issue because we were having a hard time getting answers from other vets and the lack of sympathy from some was a bit discouraging. Galaxy has been with us for 5 years and we don't see him as just a cat he is our baby. ARL recommended their partner hospital Starch Pet Hospital, they were just as responsive and were able to get him seen for surgery the next day. The Vet and staff were all very helpful and sympathetic. We will definitely recommend ARL of Iowa and Starch Pet Hospital to all of our loved ones with their furry babies

I have had great experiences at the ARL Main office and West Des Moines location, but this was my first time at this location. The women at the front desk didnt even acknowledge that I had walked in the building let alone stood across from her at her desk and asked her a question. She did not seem to be on the phone or helping anyone at the time - she completely ignored me and there was no one else in the front area I could ask for help.

Great organization. If you’re looking for a dog, do not buy look to adopt.

We adopted an adorable husky named Loki from the ARL, and everyone there was so incredibly nice and friendly. The facility is high tech with lots of room for the animals to sleep, play, and eat in. I highly recommend coming here if you want to adopt a new dog or cat. Ciao! ♥

Kind of pissed not gonna lie. I went in the the SE 14th location a total of 3 times. The first time was before my cat had kittens annd was gonna ask about fixing her and the kittens and they said that the lady was out due to maternity leave. Cool I get that good for her! The second time was early June and they said that she’s currently part time so she’s really busy, so I gave the lady at the desk my name and number. I’m a disabled vet and can’t afford to fix 5 animals. The VA sent me to the ARL.Just went in today and apparently they shut down the spay neuter clinics and I wasn’t informed. So I spent so much time WAITING TO GET A CALL THAT WAS NEVER GOING TO COME. Thanks for nothing ARL.

Always a great experience here. Yesterday we picked up two puppies. They were born yesterday morning. Very tiny

The staff makes nasty and threating calls to you if you drop off a stray animal. They accuse you of abandonment and neglect and threatened to have you arrested. I will never deal with the ARL again! The whole staff was rude, unprofessional and intimidating. What a farce for a business that "supposedly" helps animals to conduct business this way.

I have generally had positive experiences at the Main ARL building and the staff there. However, my experiences with the Pet Help Center staff have been mixed. On both occasions that I have brought my pet rats to be privately cremated through the ARL, the gentleman who I spoke to repeatedly referred to my pets as "it/its" even after filling out the paperwork indicating the name and sex of my pets. This past time I came in for a cremation, there was another staff member there who asked what was in the box I was holding, and she pulled a face and made a comment about how rats are scary when I told her it was one of my pet rats.I know they were most likely not meaning to judge or be rude, but I hoped the staff who manage the end-of-life services would be a little more mindful and empathetic. I doubt a dog or cat owner would have been treated in this manner. The services I have recieved mean the world to me, and I am incredibly grateful to have my boys' cremains and paw prints, but it does sting as a grieving pet parent to be treated in this way.

Margaux Semerad the Dog you adopted has been reported stolen out of KCMO. A detective will be in contact with the ARL of Iowa they adopted him out knowing he's was stolen I have been in contact with them for over a week now. All I want is my baby home is he my everything he saved my life .

I dropped off a family of cats(mom, dad and 2 kittens) my sister and I found abandoned. I was made to feel like I had stolen the animals, didn't do enough to find the owners, and was some kind of criminal. The kittens were found in a mop bucket and the parents left in a tote in 90 degree weather and my sister waited at the location for more than an hour for the owners to come back. I think we did the right thing making sure they were safe. Taking them to the ARL was not my first choice as Furry Friends wouldn't accept animals found in DM. Next time we'll do more research for smaller organizations that will help because the ARL will make you feel like you're being processed into jail.

Very friendly and helpful staff and volunteers make this a great place to be. The animals seem well taken care of, staff even seemed to know each by name. There are plenty of places to get pets for sure, but the level of dedication, professionalism, and personality would be very hard to beat. Clean, and new(?) facilities are thoughtful and functional. Go adopt a new buddy!

Adopted both my kitties from the ARL and they are my best friends. They both had serious medical conditions before adopting, and they were fully treated and cared for, including one having multiple surgeries to correct an eye issue. Now they are both perfectly healthy and they are obsessed with each other. Love the staff there, and I would love to foster or adopt more in the future! :)Edit: 2 years later and I've adopted two more kitties from the ARL and they are both awesome.

Love the mission of the ARL but experiences like today are why it gets a bad rap. Saw a cat available for adoption online at ARL Main location and our whole family waited outside their locked doors until the posted opening time for adoptions. We signed in as the first people there to see a certain cat and were led to her cage to find someone who was NOT waiting in line with us - not before or after us - and not signed in was already there with ARL staff and saying she was adopting the cat. Know that even if you follow all posted ARL policies, by all appearances staff or volunteers can let family and friends in before the rest of those following posted policies and can turn it into a wasted trip

If you have an emergency and need to surrender a pet good luck! They’ll tell you to take the animal back home with 0 regards to the safety and well being of other animals and people in the home. Tried to take a family members pet for them and was told to take it back home and schedule an appointment. It wasn’t their problem if it was a danger to others in the home that an appointment and approval is required. Man was a down right jerk! Will never be back to adopt nor surrender to this place!

I absolutely love this place. Got a beautiful tortoiseshell kitty here and a different kitty at their clive location. I scheduled an appointment online, "flex appointment's", and got myself waiting in the virtual line. My girlfriend had been wanting a dog, but I didn't tell her I was doing any of this beforehand. So a few days later after I get off work I tell her to make sure she'll be ready in twenty minutes, "just enough time for me to get back home". I go pick her up and we head out, "unbeknownst to her", to the A.R.L. I took the back way there so she didn't have a clue where we were going the whole time. I turned to her and asked her if she knew where we were going yet, since we were cresting the last hill to get there. When she finally figured it out she exploded into a ball of excitement and happiness!!! One of the best experiences of my life!! Now we have another member of the family, Ross, a two year old chocolate Labrador. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a good pet.

My furever baby was from here, and my brother adopted his last 2 babies from here too. For those like my darling Alice, highly recommend.

Helping animals find homes and families- and then helping provide resources for those families stay together is truly good work🩷
Elizabeth Waldrop
You guys are completely full. And want to charge to much money for a dog that is 6 months to 6 years. When I can get a puppy for less than that. Why do you think that you are full. Because it cost more to rescue then it does to get a puppy.
Ryan Randolph
Thank you for a great experience with so many great animals. We are so happy to have met and found a home for Maverick.
Cassie Lull
The arl has the responsibility of cremating my son's cat after it had to be euthanized. They ended disregarding what was on the paperwork and had him burnt with other animals so we were unable to get his ashes back. Shame on you arl.
Sarah Paddock
Very friendly staff, all the cats we saw had clean cages as well! We love our new member of our family. ❤️ I'd highly recommend going during the name your price event!

The staff here are great very friendly. Helped us find the perfect addition to our family. Thanks megan for helping us find Maggie she's doing great in her new home. We love her so much.

Got an amazing cat with a total of 8 extra toes!! We named her Paisley she is just the nicest sweetest thing. Gets along with my 3 year old bless her heart it’s not easy. She was $108 and worth every penny considering she’s fully vaxed and spayed.

I adopted Baby Moo from the ARL on April 25th Brian Madison was my Adoption counselor. (I think that was his name)He was very friendly and professional. He also gave great suggestions as well.I changed Baby Moo's name to Moo- Moo.He is adjusting slowly and coming out more and not hiding as muchHe is my morning "wake up" alarm."

We got Sugar many years ago from here (she was named Tullip when we got her) she was an amazing dog. She ended up going over the rainbow bridge today.I am thankful that we were able to find such an amazing dog at your facility.

My Jake is being held hostage by the arl and starch pet hospital but they aren't a hospital they said they are a clinic . They said I can't have my dog back til I pay most my bill. I paid over a 1000.00 in less than a week I gave them everything I have made went hungry day after day asked to see him and have been denied I am so upset that that I am getting physically sick. I have done everything they have wanted me to do and won't let me have him or see him. If they keep denying me my dog I am going to sue them for everything I can.
Bob Gates
We have been to the Main ARL a few times looking for another dog and we finally found the one that we absolutely love. As long as you are patient for the right one they will do their best to match you. They go over everything with you. So we got Storm(half Boxer/half American Bulldog to go with our Mini Aussie.
Angie Capsel
The absolute best place to go to adopt.....HANDS DOWN!!! The staff is courteous and are willing to help you find the purrrrfect pet to adopt! Thank you so much for your kindness and willingness to help find our lovely pup!!! Certainly will be back in the future and will absolutely recommend!!!!
Shyanne Ervin
Don’t surrender ur pets here!!!! I was told by an animal control officer on the south side location that if you surrender that this location you are automatically signing a paper for you to have them put ur animal to sleep the next day do not trust these animal killers!!!!!
Michaela Tanner
We got the newest member of our family here.. staff was friendly and helpful... place was clean and they seemed to really care about the animals...

Holly Marie
Everyone here is so friendly and has a true love of animals. All my pets have been adoptees from the ARL and I've had nothing but good experiences. If you're considering a pet, please adopt! They have so many sweet animals and no one will share your excitement more than the staff and volunteers at the ARL!
Cathy Hackett

Laura Castro
Samantha Cooper
I have had great experiences at the ARL Main office and West Des Moines location, but this was my first time at this location. The women at the front desk didnt even acknowledge that I had walked in the building let alone stood across from her at her desk and asked her a question. She did not seem to be on the phone or helping anyone at the time - she completely ignored me and there was no one else in the front area I could ask for help.
Mr. Van
Great organization. If you’re looking for a dog, do not buy look to adopt.
King Bjorn

Had to put my dog down a few months ago. Went to the ARL as they are more affordable than most vets. They were busy, so ended up waiting about 20 mins before finally going back. They were very nice and let us all say goodbye. Was told that we could get a paw print mold and that they would mail it to us. If not, it would be another 20 min wait and we were emotionally drained and had our 6 yr old with us, so we opted to leave and have them mail it. Made sure they had our correct address and left. 2 weeks later I haven't received it, so I call. Get the run around and woman says she'll give a note to have the department call me back. Don't hear anything, so a few hours later I call them and the same woman said she talked to the department and they hadn't sent it yet but it was getting sent that day or the next. Wait another 3 weeks and I still haven't received it so I call back again. Again am told that they will get a message to the department and they will call back. Never heard from them. So I never got my paw print. I know they're busy, but that was an important keepsake from a beloved pet for me and they couldn't even be bothered to call or mail it out. I would have waited the 20 mins if I had known this was going to happen.

They were rude to us a said they we couldn’t adopt an animal cause our other dog from here got sick and blamed it on us it’s not our fault
Sara Ryder
Such an amazing experience. Friendly staff, 5 minute wait, beautiful facility. The woman we worked with to pick a dog was patient, knowledgeable, and friendly. The volunteer at the store was helpful. The overall process was easy and straightforward. Thank you for adding so much joy to our family.

Took my dog to ARL to be put down due to a serious illness that needed a $1700 surgery. They told me they'd do the surgery but I had to surrender her and could not be the one to adopt her back. I made a tough call considering this was my son's emotional support dog and surrendered her to have the surgery done. Now even though I couldn't have her back didn't mean his dad, grandparents etc couldn't adopt her so my son could still see her. Or so I thought. They did the surgery and she did quite well. My daughter was out adopting a pet 2 weeks later and seen Leigha. Even took a picture with her to send to me. But she was informed that Leigha was not up for adoption, yet... didn't know when she would be. But for now she was kept hidden in an office. What kind of place that claims to want to find loving homes for these animals would deprive an animal the right to be adopted? Do they think they're doing her a favor? She was an emotional support dog for Pete's sake so they think she's not missing her boy? They never even gave my son's family the option to bring her back to him. Shame on you ARL.

Lots of pets to chose from that need a forever home. Live that they look into who is actually getting the pet before releasing it. I have also spent time volunteering there and would highly recommend any time, food or money you can offer them in assistance.

I adopted a dog here around 2005. I laid him to rest a couple of weeks ago. He provided myself and family with love and some of the best memories of my life. Thank you a ARL

Looked at a cat that I brought in as a stray. Had been calling to check on him and came in to adopt. Told me it would be 30 min to even be able see him and that they will text me. I come back after not receiving a text and they tell me they don’t know what cat I’m talking about. Pulled him off the website. We go to the viewing rooms so I can show her what cat I’m talking about. Then tells me oh he was just adopted 20 min ago. This place is extremely unprofessional!!

Staff was loud and had zero professionalism. One interrupted our adoption process to demand a vape from the staff member helping us. Their paperwork isn’t very clear on what condition the animals actually have, just a brief warning that something may not be quite right. On another note, i adore the cat i adopted. I just wish this place had better staffing and organization. The volunteer that was there was an absolutely amazing with the animals and was very sweet.Shop reputable breeders DON’T adopt from this place. Breeders care more about their animals then these staff members do.

If you need to have end of life services done for your pet, don't even bother scheduling an appointment. I had an appointment at 2:15 and waited two hours until my pets were taken. People were coming in without appointments and even people coming in after me were helped before I was. I was there for almost two and a half hours in total.

It’s sad to feel the need to post a 1 star review for a place seemingly doing great things for the community, but ARL has some serious work to do to improve how they manage the process of adoption.I’ve gone in a few times and it’s always the same - wait an hour or 2 to see an adoption specialist before even being able to meet the pets. I understand someone should be with me, but I don’t understand why there is such a long wait. Most recently I waited an hour and a half. By the time I finally got to go in to meet the cat I wanted, someone else adopted him. I was upset given I stated which specific cat I wanted and they gave him away anyway. I was even told “it happens all the time” and it’s “first come first serve”. I would understand not being able to reserve a cat online, but if I’m there waiting in person the animal I want should be held for me.So today I decided to try and call to make sure the cat I want is still there as I don’t want to drive all the way out there to find out the cat isn’t there. The adoption team doesn’t pick up their phone and the people who do pick up the phone just send me to the adoption team. It’s frustrating that I’m trying to do a good thing and am met with a poor experience. You’d think the ARL would do a better job making it easier to adopt given the large number of pets they need adopted.

We went to the Help Center today to drop off a cat. There were five people working at the desk. We waited ten minutes within so much as an acknowledgment. When letting them know we were next in line the guy was rather snarky in his response that us. This organization does such great things for animals it is unfortunate these particular helpers did not represent ARL well.

I was interested in a dog on their website. I called the day previous & left a voicemail stating that I wanted to make an appointment to see the dog since I had another prior experience during COVID that we needed an appointment but I thought maybe that changed. I never received a call so I called again today just to again, not get an answer. I go there & ask to see a specific dog. They tell me its an hour & 1/2 wait. For what…? I don’t know considering I already know who I wanted to see & no one seemed to care enough to answer the phone to get on a list ahead of time or to tell me I needed to be on one. I ask how I make an appointment then since they didn’t answer the phone or call me back? They say they don’t take appointments. Clearly a flawed system… wait times yet no way to be ahead? ARL is also a kill shelter. Its sad that they make it so difficult to see these animals yet if they aren’t adopted, they’re euthanized. DISGUSTING. Glad I adopted my other dog from these people.

The workers were very friendly and very attentive to my issues. I left there with no worries about my concerns and I would like to say I have looked into donating my time here. And will be donating my money every month. I love their mission and want to be part of taking care of animal's lives.I would recommend this place to anyone.Way to go ARL!!

Been looking at a rabbit for a few days. Came in an hour before close and they refused to help me adopt. Claimed there was too many people there and they didn’t have time to do paperwork. Online says they allow adoptions until 30 minutes before close. There was at least four staff hanging around and only one family that was looking at cats.Unprofessional, very disappointing.

We have been to the Main ARL a few times looking for another dog and we finally found the one that we absolutely love. As long as you are patient for the right one they will do their best to match you. They go over everything with you. So we got Storm(half Boxer/half American Bulldog to go with our Mini Aussie.

Don’t surrender ur pets here!!!! I was told by an animal control officer on the south side location that if you surrender that this location you are automatically signing a paper for you to have them put ur animal to sleep the next day do not trust these animal killers!!!!!

We got the newest member of our family here.. staff was friendly and helpful... place was clean and they seemed to really care about the animals...

I know they are doing everything for a good cause . Everyone is very friendly and helpful . But we got a kitten from there that had a kitten cold . When scheduled an appointment with them they said “ Oh it’s just a cold , it will go away “ . Well tried to explain that my other cats now have the cold and I am scheduled for the vet visit , because they are fevering and coughing , they said “ oh so sorry”. Not helpful . The kitten was a disaster of sneezing green stuff and fevering and they just said “it’s okay” and handed her back .

Disappointing experience with trying to meet a dog this week. Not enough staff to arrange a meet and greet, nobody is answering or returning phone calls even though I was told to call and “get in the queue”. Luckily the dog found a home, but very sad it wasn’t with us.
Carter Greene
We loved our experience here! The obvious care and love for every animal in there was apparent as soon as we entered the building. We were there to find a kitty to become a part of our family and it seemed like the people helping us has known every cat for their entire life. They knew their tendencies and their moods. It really showed how much time and care they out into those cats.We eventually picked out our new kitty Rue and have been in love since. These guys know what they're doing and I'd recommend to get your new animal here!
Trudy Mae
Very disappointed. Took a dear friend of mine to adopt a cat. This was her first adoption and was excited to see all the cats. The majority of the kennels were empty. We asked about cats available at ARL West. They told us that location had 9 cats. We drove to that location. They had one cat! They sent us to another location. They had zero! They sent us to yet another location. They had one! Luckily my friend loved that one and adopted it. What is going on with the ARL??? Extremely unorganized!! We were ready to give up. How many other potential adopters have given up and animals didn’t receive their forever homes?

Both of my wonderful pups have come from the arl. The training classes they reccomend really helped alot for new dog owners.

Staff and volunteers need to work on communication. Not the 1st time we've had problems. 1st time 2yrs ago with a kitten 2months of backnforth finally got to adopt. Was told she was available and was shown kitten by volunteer. After paperwork was done staff said she wasn't even adoptable yet and no holding her yet other kennels had holds. In the end we got her 2months later. Now 2yrs later call to make sure they are open so we can look at dogs as we live 45minutes away was told yes .no mention by staff that a reservation had to be made. Get to shelter and turned away as we had no reservation time. Will not return. Will adopt elsewhere. Having worked in a shelter I get things happen ,when you make a mistake admit and fix it that is the best customer service. Adopting a pet should be an enjoyable experience for everyone not a hassle and shelters wonder why they are full. There is an animal for everyone in a shelter but then the staff of shelters wonder why people go to breeders.

Been here over an hour and being refused to be given my dog.Update: my dog caught ringworm from here.Update 10/24:it’s been 3 weeks now and I suspect my dog is pregnant. They had her labeled as spayed which she never was and would explain why they didn’t release her as if she was mixed with non neutered males then they would be hooked together. I’m sure of this as they sent a letter with my dog labeled as spayed.

Couldn’t even go pick up my cat that’s in my name and microchipped to me I can’t even get my family cat 😭💔😭😭because I can’t afford it why !!! Do people have to be so cruel to not meet me in person to give me my cat back I do not think the arl should charge you to get you’re loved one back if you’re broke 💔💔😭😭

Kind, compassionate, understanding and sympathy were several things I could most of all they treated my life & dog's life with dignity and complete respect understood situation and took me & Jack to better place so that Jack could be with his best friend Duke who we lost a month ago. Today I took my daughter to visit with some animals, it's a Monday afternoon so I knew they wouldn't be too busy. After arriving we were told that the care techs were only there for people interested in adopting and if we just wanted to spend some time with them, we would have to look into volunteering. I said great my daughter is 4, how old do you have to be? They told me 10. There was maybe 1 family there looking at dogs. No dogs outside getting fresh air in the runs. No treats in the bins outside of the kennels. The only interaction these animals get is the 5mins it takes to clean their kennels. It's frustrating that we can't go there and give them some attention while they wait for their forever homes. We decided to stop in the gift shop and get a cat toy to help with the disappointment of not being able to see the animals, we were told to pay in the front where we stood for 5min before someone completely walked pasted and ignored us, so we left.
Chelo Bob
The staff were friendly & AWESOME with the animals. They demonstrate patience and flexibility when handling/showing and genuinely care for each animal there. All animals were in good condition in clean areas. We rented a cat for 60 days before adoption to make sure it would be a great fit for our family and the cat; and $0 down. Would recommend to all.
Jacob (l1berate)
Great place. Employee was very friendly and patient as she introduced us to all the cats and dogs waiting for a good home. They currently ask you to "wait in line" by calling them or using the website. That way only one family is looking at the pets at a time. Also, unlike some businesses, every employee was wearing their mask correctly and our guide frequently used hand sanitizer.

This scam exists to make lawyers rich. They are a legal 'troll' org masquerading as an animal shelter. They are also a kill shelter. Keep this mind when considering the care they give animals. They make you sign a contract with many unreasonable stipulations. One is that you will pay them $1000 if try to find a new home for an animal. Other reviews say they could not get a call back. Try posting an ad for an animal, from there, with a "$" in it; they call you immediately. Apparently that cuts into their "adoption fees". You can't ask for money but they can. They will vehemently claim they didn't sell the animal; It's a (considerable) fee for the privilege of being able to adopt.Another stipulation is how you confine and restrain the animal. For instance, it could get impossible to prevent a dog from running into traffic.Even if they are cheaper, avoid the legal headache and go elsewhere. Otherwise, the animal's death might be an unfortunate blessing. And the ARL is a kill facility so if you "surrender" the animal, they would just kill it themselves.
michelle klyn
I love everything they are trying to do to help or furry friends get forever homes! Their policy of letting you adopt a pet and if it's not a "good fit" you can exchange it for another one is a great way to make sure both animal and person are well suited for each other! I think they give you two weeks to decide . Also, I think they should do back ground checks on people just to make sure they don't have any animal cruelty or abuse charges. And one last thing is , it would be great if they had a hot line or a web page where new pet owners could go to get help with potty training and other common issues that owners are faced with. Or make sure they know the basics before they even get to take the pet home. 😊

I personally didn’t adopt a dog there but my daughter did a husky & German Shepard mix sweet dog! But they sent him out of the ARL with Kennel Cough. When we notice we called the next day but they didn’t think it was serious enough even though the cough was terrible after 5th day I went down there! They were forced to help him! He is doing pretty good now! They didn’t put any effort into training him whatsoever! I am a monthly donor for this organization a bit disappointed!

Adopted our lovable senior dog, Todd, there. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the animals. They had a great pet supply shop inside where you get a discount if you are adopting but you can go there anytime it's open. We got a discount on adoption fees for our Todd because he was a senior. Their website has the listings and info about the different animals they have available and was helpful to us for window shopping before we arrived.

We just adopted our boy Nash and he’s the sweetest of boys. I loved our adoption counselor she was super sweet and super great about explaining everything about him. Thank you ARL for this amazing handsome boy!
What Happened
I was here a week ago not long after they opened for the day, and was greeted and helped immediately upon walking through the door. I had browsed their website for a solid week beforehand as I live a good ways, I feel they could provide a bit more information on their adoptable animals, but thats a small gripe considering they do a good job keeping the website up to date. They keep it very clean and all of their animals look very well attended to. If they aren’t too busy it is best to ask for assistance and additional information about animals you are interested in if it isn’t provided online.I adopted a cat named Whispurr, 11 years old and who is nothing but a cuddle monster, just on his own terms. He adapted well to the other resident felines and quickly at that. He will sleep on or around me at night and I’m certain he knows that this is his forever home.

I went to pick up my dog who had gotten out of my back yard. He had been gone for a couple hours. (He was at the arl for less than 2 hours before I figured out that’s where he was) and I was told I had to pay over $100 to get him back, not only that but I was also very rudely told if I can’t come up with the money in 7 days that they were putting him up for adoption. To top it off the girl I spoke to there told me that they try their best to reunite pets with their owners. But no one had even attempted to get ahold of me. They don’t reunite pets with their owners they sell your beloved pets back to you to make a profit. This place is disgusting

They didn't help me at all. So I bought a Golden Retriever. Best choice I've ever made.

Staff and volunteers are so kind and helpful. We went to just play with some animals and left with a bonded pair of cats. This was 2 weeks ago. The staff perfectly matched the cats to our family and I can't imagine life without these sweethearts now. The ARL is clean, well-staffed and inviting. Animal bios are as complete as possible and the staff tries to provide as much training as possible while the animals are there.
Cassie Van Haalen
The staff and volunteers are so passionate. I wasn’t sure I was ready to adopt a dog yet, but just wanted to look. I stopped in and fell in love with a dog. When I returned to adopt, she was already adopted so I decided to look around when I decided to take a chance on a sweet black lab mix puppy. They brought him out for me very quickly, found out all his information when I asked (had a mark on his back from a form of mange that was treated by them, awesome!). I took Smokey, now know as Wrigley, home that day and I couldn’t be happier. The staff was so incredibly nice and were genuinely excited for me. They give you a huge information packet that includes a free first visit to the vet. Very clean facilities, all the animals are very well cared for, all microchipped, and I can’t say enough how much the staff truly cares. Couldn’t be happier!

I recently adopted my pet from ARL. The employees work hard and appeared to be having fun. The gal I encountered at the front desk was a bit curt but once I was past her it was a great experience.

I read a lot of negative reviews about this shelter but didn't believe it until I went for myself. This shelter is the WORST run animal shelter I have ever been too and I feel sorry for the animals that are there. The facility is really nice but the way they operate makes it very difficult to adopt. You can't interact with or adopt an animal unless you get on a 1 hour waiting list. I understand that you can't just grab an animal and check out, but they are under-staffed and don't even have an appointment system to try to make it easier and organized. The cages are plastic too so you can't even pet or play with the animals. They look so miserable and helpless in there. The adoption fees are high ($100 for a cat). They should be open to criticism and realize they aren't doing what's best for the animals. I suggest the shelter get tips on how to run a successful shelter that actually helps animals from the Cedar Rapids Humane Society or the Humane Society of Stillwater Oklahoma.
Lisa Mathes
Adopted 2 cats from here. The one was on the website and described accurately. We live trapped kittens and brought them here. They adopted them out. We have used their vet services for low cost spay and neuter when it wasn't available where we lived. Have also received advice by phone that really helped. I am now a volunteer for them. Highly recommend!

The place appears fancy and well taken care of at first. However, staff were rude, interrupted me constantly, and shot down my ideas almost as soon as I spoke. They rejected the idea that anyone could have a service dog that "a dogs a dog regardless." I'm sorry, but I have an actual condition where a service dog would be a big help so don't tell me if I need one or not. Of the 10 or so dogs I met, only one was active. I don't know if that's a sign that they're mistreated or if they're just sick of living in a shelter. The active dog liked me a lot and I really liked him but he was on a waiting list. Even after telling them I was poor and in college and was looking for a dog to fit my specific lifestyle, they pointed me in the direction of a dog that had potential medical issues. I can't afford that as they should've already known if they were listening to me. They were unhelpful in all ways that matter, always pointing me in the direction of a new dog instead of helping me come to a decision. It almost seems as though they don't care if a dog is adopted or not. Absolutely do not go here.
Kati Oetken
I had the worst and similar interaction and experience as Emily and Trudie (reviews before me) did. I can’t believe how this place’s staff is just so horrible and gone down the tubes. Rude. Ingenious. No empathy. An embarrassment for how they treated me. I came in and disclosed I had adopted my cat from a different ARL 14 years ago and our family cats were ARL pets too— and love and support the ARL. I mentioned I lost my cat of 14 years recently and was hoping to meet a furever pet. The staff was the most ill attentive, bored, finger knitting looking down and it was clear no one wanted to help me. Then as I looked around I was treated like a thorn in the side. I was in the way as I looked on and not acknowledged. There were only 2 descriptions and the rest of the 20+ cats had nothing. Then they said not unless I was serious could I even go in with an adult and pet or touch any of them. I said uh I haven’t even met the cat how could you be wanting to take them home..? I need to meet them and interact like I have in the past when I’ve visited other ARLs…Then they said oh that one you’re interested in isn’t available … then I said well which one is…? They said most of them aren’t…. Then I said ok how is it you have all of these and NONE of them are available? They all had their operations… I said no way not all of those old cats have that. Then they ignored me. No one even offered to introduce me these cats or even other pets? I went to the car and cried at their lack of empathy. It was a slap in the face. Not a happy place at all… I will not be supporting this ARL at this location. Thanks a lot for a heartbreaking experience with lack of empathy. Truly soul-less people working today. No one even tried to help me and avoided me and non apologetic. And the front desk girl has the nerve to finger knit and make complaints about it. I mean what a rude interaction. 22nd st. The worst disappointment not what I needed in my life at all right now.

Don't come here for end-of-life services. Go elsewhere. You make an "appointment" time that doesn't mean anything. My time was noon. Was told to go outside and wait for them to call me. I left after waiting 2 hours.

John Drewes
Both of my wonderful pups have come from the arl. The training classes they reccomend really helped alot for new dog owners.

Thanks you for all you do for the forgotten animals !!! Our dog Cariba was a rescue dog 6 years ago !!!

Got our dog here absolutely amazing staff was knowledgeable and very patient. They explained everything and made sure I knew what kind of care my pup needed. My kids and I are very happy with our new addition to our family.

Makayla Folkerds
Couldn’t even go pick up my cat that’s in my name and microchipped to me I can’t even get my family cat 😭💔😭😭because I can’t afford it why !!! Do people have to be so cruel to not meet me in person to give me my cat back I do not think the arl should charge you to get you’re loved one back if you’re broke 💔💔😭😭

We were here on 7/10/22. This place was amazing and very patient. They answered all my questions and were very knowledgeable. We got a sibrian husky. He has been amazing and great with kids. Couldn't ask for a better place to adopt from. Thank you.
Stephanie Carpenter
She is the sweetest pig ever. I'm glad we are her forever home!

My experience was wonderful and We fell in love with two dogs but my first choice was reserved and my second was adopted then they told me the first choice was not reserved for a interested family so I ended up getting June who I wanted. June is now Maisy Griffith-Roland. What a wonderful addition to the family. We have to potty train her and get a couple shots that she needs and it was an easy adoption.I recommend anyone who is looking for a forever fur baby to go here and look for your new family member!

Today I adopted 3 kittens from ARL. The staff was very helpful, in spite of how busy they were doing vaccines on all of the cats. They told me that the cat I was looking for was at another location so I went down there and they were wonderful as well. I was in and out in less than half an hour. The kitties are healthy and very happy here in their new home. The next 20 years with these beautiful animals should be completely wonderful. Thank you, ARL.
Nyx Aidoniis
Does not actually care about the welfare of outside cats and will tell you to leave outside cats alone. No recommendations for programs or places that do TNR or anything. Will also blacklist you from ever adopting an animal in the future if you surrender a stray animal. They're like the CPS of the animal world, act like they care so much about animals, but they're really just money hungry control freaks.
KriStiN
Their spay/neuter program is awesome and affordable. They treated my cat like their own and even got her micro chipped along with her nails cut. I would give ten stars. The whole process went smooth and had detailed post surgery instructions. Thank you.
Kayla Stroh
We had a wonderful experience! We were looking to adopt a kitten for my daughter for Christmas. Boy did we find the purrrrfect one! He was back in the room where they keep the sick kitties while treating them. He had a slight cold but we immediately loved him. He gives hugs and kisses and loves to be up around your neck and carried constantly! He even is ok with wearing sweaters and other clothes!!His cold is gone and he has bonded with his new mom and dad.The workers were awesome in helping us choose and the paperwork all went very smoothly.Thank you so much for the new member of our family!
Lori Smith
I adopted my dog Joe here in January. He's just the best! I highly recommend the ARL for adoption and their other services as well. My late guy Marley passed away in my home last year and they were so kind and caring. I had him cremated there and he came back to me the next week.
Hedi Alavi
So thankful for ARL and all they do. We’ve gotten our 4 cats from them and they were generous enough to offer medical services after they were adopted.
Al Gal
My partner and I adopted Rambo today. We had an amazing experience, specifically with Josh! He was honest with us, friendly and you could tell he genuinely cared for these dogs and the homes they end up in. Rambo is doing great already and I can’t wait until he gets even more comfortable.
Carolina Casals
I went for an event at their dog park, it was very fun! People there are very nice.

Allen Hentscher
Adopted our lovable senior dog, Todd, there. Staff was friendly and very knowledgeable about the animals. They had a great pet supply shop inside where you get a discount if you are adopting but you can go there anytime it's open. We got a discount on adoption fees for our Todd because he was a senior. Their website has the listings and info about the different animals they have available and was helpful to us for window shopping before we arrived.
Amity McConnell-Hess

Only place I'll adopt my fur babies from! They may not always know everything you wish they would know about the animal you're interested in, but they sure do try! Adopted my bubba cat 3 1/2 years ago now and the process was smooth! Very helpful in finding a pet suited for us. One of our fur babies passed away last summer and they were very comforting and helpful when it came to the cremation process and looking for a new fur friend for our other babies. The first doggo we picked and loved wasn't quite the right fit for us so we took advantage of their return/exchange window and picked out another fur baby. I love that the animals are chipped and checked out before being put up for adoption. So happy to have been able to save some fur babies ❤️ Thank you volunteers!!

Here's the story. On a Saturday we went in to look at the animals. We found a 8 month dog/puppy we were really interested in. We knew because we have a dog of our own. We would like to see how they interact together. We live about 20-25 min away. The shelter put the dog on hold for us to see how it would turn out. So we go home and get our dog, come back to the shelter so they can meet each other. They were fine. A little vocal that sounds bad but no snarling or anything outrageous. Plus doesn't help when both dogs are a little hyped up on energy at the moment. In the end we decide we are going to adopt the dog. When we go to the front desk to fill out the papers they tell us, "we need to go home first, drop off our dog and then come back for her." They said we will put her on hold for you. So we go I drop off my wife little daughter and dog. Start driving back. At this time it has been about 3 hours to do this whole process they were about to close (45 min before closing). When I get there. I'm waiting in line next to the counter (they should know why I'm here now as I've only been at this front counter three times for the same dog.) They don't greet or say anything and I have to find out this family is adopting a dog named the exact same dog I had on hold. Didn't think twice because we just had a conversation that most people name their dogs Oreo, midnight and Nala. Then the person goes into details of the dog. I then realize that's more than likely the same dog. I come over and say a couple things like is this type of dog (breed color age) is the one your adopting. The receptionist looks at me and said, like I was stupid, sorry they are adopting this dog. At this point I'm not mad the dog was being adopted to another family. As the dog deserves to go to a loving family. What really made me mad. Is the time I wasted to have a "dog on hold" to have the dog go to another family. The whole time we were there at the shelter there was no communication and everything was just do whatever. I will never support this shelter or the employees there for what they did as that was a huge waste of my time. Never going back there again and will always tell this story if they ever come to mind again.

We all need to get behind all the hard work the staff do every day. Dog's can fill every aspect of a life. I should say any pet can. The best place a person can visit to be rewarded instantly. Pet's show more love than we can ever know about. The staff is top notch as usual. Thankyou for all you do.
Cindy Simons
Wonderful facility! My husband and I went in here a few times over the course of a couple of months to check out some of the dogs they had available for adoption and each time the volunteers and staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The adoption process is very smooth as well and we absolutely love our Gracie.

Please don't foster through them. I received two kittens and they were a little condescending when they handed them to me. When I asked about food because they were transitioning to solids they told me to just google it. I was transparent from the start that this was my first time fostering. I felt overwhelmed and like I had no resources. They got diarrhea and I brought them in and instead of pulling me aside they told me in front of a bunch of other people that they both tested positive for parvovirus. They made me feel like it was my fault and the literally came out saying "I was afraid this would happen", "you're not getting those kittens back", and "youre not allowed to foster for six months". No explanation on the last one, I had to google it at home later that the virus can live on for six months. I only had them for a week and my one cat is an indoor only vaccinated cat so they had to have come with the virus. They made me feel responsible. they said I could email for updates but in the last week I have emailed twice with no response. and even though I am banned from fostering they continue to send me the lists of kittens that need fosters. Broke my heart.

Staff was very informative, patient and kind. Answered of our questions about the adoption process. Currently they are doing a virtual line, where you fill out your info online and have a place in line. They then text you with updates about your status in the line. The times were a little off, but overall a good experience.

We adopted our sweet cat Millie from the ARL over a year ago at the main location. We have loved our little nugget and the ARL has always been helpful with any questions we had. We've stopped in a few other times to look at getting another pet and the staff has been extremely friendly and helpful each time. We especially love their rent a pet program that let's you do a slow introduction with pets already in the home. They let you return the pet if it doesn't work out and give you a full refund.

I had to surrender my dog daisy, pit bull terrier due to my housing situation... I thought by sending her to the ARL she would have a better chance at having a good home.. family etc. I've had her since she was a puppy. (She was 2years). Happy, playful..dog. Me being a single parent, I couldn't care for her after having my 3rd child. So as I said I surrender her on Saturday..the 9th.. and Monday the 11th. I'm notified that she is going to be put to sleep... After they have excerised all options there was no other choice. I just don't understand why so quickly?. I felt like that didn't give daisy a chance. ,I'm so broken about this because she didn't deserve that. An now my gurl is gone. I didn't send her to the ARL to be put sleep ..but to give her a better home.

I recently had to have my dogs put in Foster Care at the ARL Main Center. They were there for 10 days. The care and attention they received was wonderful and very helpful to me. My dogs and I have never been separated, yet they understood that and did Everything they could to ensure they were comfortable and cared for.Thank you ARL. You made a real difference in my life.
nicol9585
Very clean. The staff and volunteers are extremely friendly. We had to take a puppy there once 5 years ago it broke my heart but we could afford his vet treatment and had no time to train him, (we were told it was a 2yr jackrussel by owners turned out it was a 6month old mix no training.) we also got our 5yr old dog there in 2013.

Amy Peters
Mary Murtaugh

My experience was abysmal. They wouldn’t allow me to surrender my dog for adoption despite being told they have resources for behavioral training. They said they DIDN’T have resources for behavioral training.I traveled 45 minutes after having to do a bunch of leg work proving certain things. They said my mini dachshund was not adoptable. These were untrained staff making decisions. When recalling my experience to Ames Shelter, they were appalled by what happened. 0/5 stars.

Helped my friend find his new best friend. The helpers were very nice and explained details when we met some of the dogs. When we were loosing hope Cleo walked into the room and sat next to my friend and he knew that was his best friend.
Lynn Ripperger
We were there for a party in one of the rental rooms. The room was nice and roomy, nice setting, plenty of space for a modest size get together. The day we went there were some issues though. They had offered us a tour though the animals, including the horse barn, but we never got the tour. And when my sister went up to ask later if she could see some of the animals, she was told (quite rudely) they it was after they closed (6pm) so she couldn't.I also know that when the ones got there to set up, they had to wait because the staff had lost the key. That made them late for setting up, so they were still setting up everything well after the time the party was supposed to startThis might be just an isolated incident, but that was our experience last weekend.

KIM was a true help. I had previously spoke with someone else and then got ghosted. 2 of my adult cats got pregnant a week after eachother so I had 3 adults and 11 kittens! She told me about pet food and litter assistance since I was going through 3-400 a check just in toys, litter, food etc. Also informed me on how to sign up for pet adoption forms, showed me how to get a fee code waive and much more! KIM ROCKS!!
Echo Evans
Great place to get a furry companion from very clean and organised. Let you know exactly how you should report issues once pet is adopted. Also offers classes, pet store items, meet and greets in a closed off hug rooms. Very friendly staff as well.
Constance Kring
Very nice helpful staff who are easy to communicate with and keep behavior records and family type app recommendations on each pet. I liked the private room with windows inside the area where I could take one pet at a time and see how it bonded or didn't bond with me. Also you learn it's personality, I bought s Min pin and a Vhihuaus. Loved them both! Chihuahua

Went there for a puppy we saw online we were the first people there at 10:30am, me and my wife were the first to apply for this puppy waited 30 min to find out that one other family applied after us. I always thought it was first come first serve but apparently that does not count for puppies they put my family’s name and the other family in a hat and drew a name out. We were not the family chose at random. And then told us if the other family doesn’t want him I would get second choice.i would have understood if they gave both families interviews and maybe they had something we didn’t have like a fenced in yard or something. I don’t know how a random drawing is a fair way to decide who gets the dog. We took the time to get there early and make sure we were first because we cared about this dog and really wanted him. Very unprofessional I do not recommend.

I was a volunteer in December for this place there pigs got brucellosis and I was supposed to wear gear but I asked the barn coordinator if I needed to wear gear she said no so now I have seizures from brucellosis they had a meeting about the pigs what they so I emailed them and they gave me a number to call and got denied for testing cause I was a volunteer now I am getting a seizure alert service dog I have permanent seizures have fun in court plus I am gonna get this place shutdown and I am gonna make sure these animals get the right treatment and everything DONT VOLUNTEER HERE THEY WON'T CARE ABOUT YOU AT ALL!!!!

One of the best places for animal lovers and adoptable animals in Des Moines, Ia. Have adopted and used their services over 30 years now. Hoping this ARL lasts 100 years +! Great volunteers and facilities. The gift shop should be expanded quite a bit. Overall, great location and even better services.

I love this place. It's filled with positivity and possibilities. I was there this time to just drop off a donation of supplies. While I was there I was glad to see a family completing their adoption of a Springer spaniel type dog. Who is going to his forever home. Enough said!

Their spay/neuter program is awesome and affordable. They treated my cat like their own and even got her micro chipped along with her nails cut. I would give ten stars. The whole process went smooth and had detailed post surgery instructions. Thank you.

I adopted my dog Joe here in January. He's just the best! I highly recommend the ARL for adoption and their other services as well. My late guy Marley passed away in my home last year and they were so kind and caring. I had him cremated there and he came back to me the next week.

So thankful for ARL and all they do. We’ve gotten our 4 cats from them and they were generous enough to offer medical services after they were adopted.

My partner and I adopted Rambo today. We had an amazing experience, specifically with Josh! He was honest with us, friendly and you could tell he genuinely cared for these dogs and the homes they end up in. Rambo is doing great already and I can’t wait until he gets even more comfortable.

We had to say goodbye to our yellow lab, Buddy. He was 12 years old. He donated everything to such a great loving place. We miss him, but are glad his things are going to a wonderful place.

My dog passed away very unexpectedly from Pyometra and I rushed to get her cremated but arrived 10 minutes after they closed but there were still plenty of workers inside. This was very inconvenient since my dog was very big and I had to leave her in the car overnight in the hot summer. I hope in the future it is possible to drop off a fur baby for cremation and not have to deal with looking at them lifeless.

Three weeks ago I adopted a stray year old cat. She papers to be a nearly if she isn't a pure breed lilac point Siamese. She is a wonderful kitty, and gets along famously with my other cat, Cody. I was looking for a companion for Cody as he missed hid two older sisters. It was a match made in heaven. I have now adopted two cats in two years and the ARL has been great to work with. I am handicapped and in today's Covid 19 world they were very helpful in finding me a companion for my Cody.Thank you very much for your help and the great staff that catered to meJames Schneider

We were sad that we had to take out one of our rescued cats to the shelter but it was necessary because are two male cats are not getting along after we added this one to the mix. I rather male cat that has been with us and been so gentle forever but my son three times. So we were glad that the ARL was here and had a wonderful place and would hold on to him until they could find a new home for him. The accommodations for the cats are incredible. They have Condos for a lot of the cats along with some of them in their own little spaces. They had a pair of cats that had medical needs that have been there for over 2 years that needed to be adopted together. I know that our orbit is in good hands if they will wait that long for these to be adopted that I'm sure they will help find him a good home. #lzdrv #littlezebradragons

Great place went out of there way to help when another shelter wouldn't let me adopt for having to surrender and animal for behavior issues with my daughter when she was 2 years old they helped me find a dog that's good for the family and were very understanding of the situation

I just called you guys in regards to a stray cat I saved who needs attention. And you guys are gonna tell me since I don't own the cat or anything you won't help her. Are you kidding me? Isn't it your guys job to help animals in need? It's cool though. I'll shell out the money need at the vet since I have to do your job for you.Update: the stray cat is doing very well. Complete recovery and on her way to her new home tomorrow. No thanks to you guys.

Very helpful and knowledgeable staff! Very happy with my experience there. The adoption went very quickly and smoothly. I am thankful for Second Chance Ranch because they gave me a new four-legged friend to love. Highly recommend this place!

I think this place is a hit and miss on some things, like animal adoption, mostly good animals but one time my sister in law adopted a cat from them and I couldn't get over how bad it smelled the first day she brought it home. It made me have service thoughts of adopting from them. Yet another time when my cat was looking very sickly, I had him taken in and examined. They found his kidneys were failing so we agreed to have him put to sleep. Heart broken and no money, with the help of another stranger who put a few dollars down towards the cremation of my cat and the arl willing to take payments, I was able to take his ashes home. I still owe them money but I still was able to take my baby home. I can't thank them enough! Thank you arl

We are so fortunate to have such a nice facility. I picked up Dog apples today and the place was busy but was greeted by friendly staff members. Get your dog or human apples before they run out. Goes to a good cause.

One starves being way to generous for this place. We adopted a dog in October 10th. We asked all the questions, vaccinations, illnesses everything. We found out today on October 14th the dog had oarvo and fas infected our year old dog. This place is totally unprofessional abd disgusting how they are dealing with this. We wanted them to treat our older dog too because it was to late to get her into a vet but they refused. Low life and inhumane

I am not a fan of the majority on people who work there.I have a friend who was going to throw her 2 cats out on the street, cause she was too lazy to take them to the ARL.So I told her I would take them so they don't end up on the street. When I took them in, the main lady (she's an older lady) asked me why I brought them in, so I explained to her.She asked why I didn't keep them, I told her I already have 4 cats and can't take more. She had an attitude with me the whole time. She asked if they were mine... (After I explained to her that they were my friends, and that my friend gave them to me to take there.)She got right up in my face and kept asking me if they were mine.So I just said yes.I wasn't going to lie to them, but apparently that's what they want you to do.Then this girl kept asking me over and over if they were strays, why I didn't keep them, asking what happened, then said, "so they're strays?" I finally just looked at her and said yes. She talks 100 MPH.No wonder she couldn't figure out what I was saying.I was finally done with those 2 rude women. Then a 3rd girl said, " I'm sure you're annoyed with the questions, if you can just tell me what happened, that's it."I told her, and she didn't argue.I paid them $20 and that was it.A friend of mine went in one day to buy a container for her dog that was ran over, she was heart broken about it.The older lady there was mean to her and made her feel even worse about her dog.She went on their website and wrote a bad review, and they deleted it.If you have a bad review at the ARL, be sure to put it on Google, cause they will delete it from their website.

Took my little boy and got him fixed then everything now he's got a little nicer attitude to and stuff cuz he was a little mean for me thank you.jl

Animal Rescue League is a great place to go looking for your next pet. They offer a lot of services to help us take care of our four legged friends as well, all you need to do is ask. We've adopted two cats from the ARL in the past and will be going back here soon to look for our next companion.
Christian Birdsong
Found our beautiful new family member here. They let us take her home on a trial period to ensure she would fit in with everyone ahead of time. Would recommend this place 100%!
Brandon Rubio
they will take calls from minors and remove dogs from homes with no other consent. then when you try to get your dog back they demand pictures and tell you because you werent there when they got the dog that you are no longer the owner. hopefully they enjoy the lawsuit coming.

Having just lost our beloved dog, we stopped in to inquire about donating her things. The staff was very friendly & compassionate. Their love & concern for the animals in their care is evident.

There are sooooo many reasons I love the ARL. This week I found one more. We just adopted a wonderful 10-year old cat. The staff at the ARL were almost as excited as we were and they made our visit there super chill. Honestly, the only reason I don't visit more often is bc I'd end up bringing a cat or dog home with me every time...

Dog day out, was amazing!!! Everyone there is so helpful, friendly, happy and active. Very clean and happy place! You can easily tell all the fur babies get care, attention and adoption preparation as needed.

I adopted a 8 yr old female black lab from arl on Dec 10, 2018 after having to put my 10 yr old female black lab to rest. The lab i adopted was named Raven( still here name). Everyone at arl was great. The whole adoption took less than an hr. Raven is a great dog. She has found her forever home with me. NEVER WILL I GIVE HER UP

KIM ROCKS!!
