Forest Lawn Cemetery, located in Buffalo, New York, is not only a place of rest for the deceased but also a significant historical and cultural landmark. Established in 1849, it spans over 269 acres, making it one of the largest cemeteries in the United States. Forest Lawn is known for its beautiful landscaping, impressive sculptures, and notable monuments, embodying the rural cemetery movement of the 19th century which sought to create cemetery parks that were as much about the living as they were about memorializing the dead. The cemetery was designed with the idea of creating a peaceful and scenic environment, moving away from the earlier, more crowded churchyard burial grounds. This concept was part of a broader movement that influenced the creation of public parks and green spaces across America. The layout of Forest Lawn includes winding paths, gentle hills, serene lakes, and a diverse collection of trees and plants, designed to reflect a natural, park-like setting.Over the years, Forest Lawn has become the final resting place for many prominent individuals, including U.S. Presidents, inventors, artists, and business leaders. This has made it not only a place of historical interest but also a site of pilgrimage for those wishing to pay their respects to these notable figures. Among its famous residents are President Millard Fillmore, singer Rick James, and inventor Lawrence Dale Bell, founder of Bell Aircraft Corporation.Forest Lawn is also known for its commitment to education and community engagement. It offers a variety of tours, events, and educational programs that highlight the cemetery's rich history, art, and architecture. These activities provide insights into the lives of the individuals buried there, as well as the cultural and historical contexts in which they lived. The cemetery has evolved over the years, adding new sections and embracing modern memorial practices, yet it remains committed to preserving its historical legacy and natural beauty. Forest Lawn continues to serve as a vital part of Buffalo's heritage, offering a unique blend of history, culture, and natural beauty to residents and visitors alike.

We decided to go here since we had a few hours to kill before our flight out if Buffalo. It was worth it. This cemetery is over 200 acres and has a lot of history. Rick James is buried here...but more important historical figures are as well. The monuments are so huge, varied and beautiful. Don't miss the big memorial that has the mother, the father looking down on their son...all marble figures in glass and concrete.

Forest Lawn Cemetery is located in the heart of Buffalo and although in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city, you can't help but feel in the country and at peace when on its grounds. The entire cemetery is well landscaped over rolling hills and scattered with lakes, ponds and a stream. The old time arcticecture and stones is something you just don't find anymore bringing you back in time. When it's time to start looking for a site, you will not find a more professional, caring team then the one at this cemetery. They are extremely fast at getting back to all questions and concerns and work around your schedule as much as possible. When finally meeting in person, they all sit down and listen to your needs and wants. They take you through the grounds and mark specific grave sites that are available. Upon completion, you go back to the main office where you will discuss further options, from payment, to stone types allowed all the way down to how many caskets/urns can be buried in a single plot. At no time do they pressure you and give you as much time as you need to make your decision for your loved ones or yourself. All financing is done in house and can be either paid up front in one single time where you will get 30% off the plot site or over a period of time with 10% down. When looking for a final resting place, look no further then the grounds of Forest Lawn Cemetery.

OMG! In the heart of Buffalo, an amazing place not to be missed! Many old famous Graves, beautiful, wonderful wildlife , peaceful, relaxing, heartwarming, not to mention the best place to be buried in. Several of my family members are buried there and someday I will be there too. I have taken my granddaughter there many times and she always happy as we see a lot of Wildlife and she enjoys learning about the rich history !

I normally visit cemeteries that are much older than this but this is, by far, the most beautiful. Take a tour. Grab a map from the office and visit the graves of many Buffalo celebrities. Great for walking.

Such a lovely place. This is one of my favorite areas in Buffalo. It's a nice escape from the city, especially the very center of it that's around a small lake where all of the mausoleums are. This part is so peaceful and usually here you'll see different types of geese, ducks, deer, and carp in the creek that runs through the cemeteryThe tours here are really cool too. I had done a walking tour of notable people who are here and it was so fascinating to learn about Buffalo history in this way

I've lived here my whole life and today was the first time I visited the Cemetery! It is gorgeous and beautiful! However the ponds were full of dead fish and birds! The smell was awful! It couldn't have happened over night so I'm not sure why it hasn't been taken care of?

Beautiful, quiet place. Great place to walk, bike, and even drive through (maybe even go on a date! ;). I was a little surprised about that last bit, but I quickly realized how big the cemetary was and almost got lost! Fortunately, someone's marked the road so you can find your way out of the labyrinth!

I'm standing on a bridge within the cemetery. Looking backwards and looking forward. I know there's a metaphor here, somewhere. The snow ❄️ is steadily coming down and it's cold. I know a lot of people buried here and each time I pay respects, during the grief - I feel it in my heart, reminded of the love that people shared.I'm going to share 3 quotes on death. Years ago, I met the Chilean 🇨🇱 American writer, Isabel Allendé at Klienhans. She said, " Just as when we come into the world, when we die, we are afraid of the unknown. But the fear is something from within us that has nothing to do with reality. Dying is like being born. Just a change"."Death smiles at us all, all a man can do is smile back", Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. And best for last, "...If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for - he isn't for to live...', Dr Martin Luther King Jr.Have a safe day folks.......

Over decades several generations of families member's have been buried at this cemetery. They offer compassionate service and even follow up on how you are doing. I know my loved ones are with the Lord and I will see them again, but being able to visit all of their final resting places, at this well maintained cemetery, is comforting.

From my initial email to this review, my experience has been excellent. Erica called and arranged my parents’ burial and walked me through everything. The gentleman that met us at the entrance and let us to the family plot was sweet and patient, and the gentleman that waited for us to say goodbye and then put the ashes in the ground was very professional and kind. Both sides of my family are buried at Forest Lawn, and I have been going there since I was very small to “visit” and feed the ducks. I carried on this tradition with my children. I was very surprised to receive the message from Elizabeth extending her sympathies and making sure all went well! All of the staff at Forest Lawn made the experience of laying my parents’ to rest peaceful and and stress-less! Thank you from a grateful daughter. Suzanne

I recently took the trolley tour with my dad and was left with a deeper understanding of the people who made the city of Buffalo (and the world!) what it is today. It's a profound experience to move through a place where so many incredible spirits are all laid to rest. It's not only an absolutely beautiful natural space, but one that will leave you with a sense of pride in Buffalo. The guides were great and after having car trouble on the way to the tour and missing our appointment, the staff squeezed us in to another without trouble. Highly recommend visiting this wonderful place!

This is one of the most beautiful cemeteries I've ever seen. However, the process to bury a loved one here was terrible. It was a few years ago now, but burying my God-father here was awful. The people who worked here kept telling us how the caskets were stacked like pancakes. Don't ask me why she kept saying that to us when we were seeing if we could bury him with his mom. There were different quotes given to me and then my God mom when she got there to do arrangements (mine was much lower). Nothing was digitized so the lady pulled out an ancient book to pencil in that we were buying his ashes there. I couldn't go back to the cemetery after the graveside service for awhile I was so angry.Later, when we buried my grandmother, they broke the headstone and we walked on top of other flat headstones on a tarp to get the the grave side. It felt so disrespectful. It's beautiful to visit, but I don't think I want to bury anymore loved ones they're after my past few interactions with the business side there.

Great place to go for some peace and quiet. Also, a great place for bird watching and photography. Little annoyed that the bathrooms are still closed. Have been since around covid. Signs on the door state that something terrible and disgusting happened and that's why they're closed. I don't know what happened but it sure would be nice to go there (3 years later) and spend some time knowing that I can use the facilities if I have to.

Recently we buried my mothers ashes at Forest Lawn. We had a Catholic mass two months earlier and we were waiting for better weather. Unfortunately the day we buried her ashes was cold and wet. We had a small service in one of their beautiful chapels. One of their employees , who use to be in the religious order gave a wonderful heartfelt talk about my mother, death and the process of dying. It moved me to tears. Forest Lawn is not only beautiful, the people who work there are compassionate, professional and quick to respond to needs. I would highly recommend their services when someone is faced with the death of a loved one.

Forestlawn Cemetery is the most beautiful place. Both of my parents have been laid to rest in the Serenity Mausoleum and my husband and I also have a spot there. As far as picking out a final resting place, the staff was wonderful in assisting us.Forestlawn is not just a cemetery though. So many famous people are buried there. There is a lot of history. The cemetery tours are so interesting and there is also a field guide available to purchase that maps out where people of note were buried and unique monuments.

I lived across the street from here and this place is just serene and peaceful. The graves are works of art and the history is amazing. Class trips should be mandatory in this place because there are just so many historical people in it, many of whose names bypassed the books. The dead do talk to us if you listen closely enough
Carl Weiser
I got a request from Forest Lawn to write a Google review, which is kind of odd. It's not like I'm a connoisseur of cemeteries, or some TikTok graveyard influencer. ("10/10 would recommend!") But I did just bury mom there and I have to say everything went perfectly. They were ready for our somewhat crowded procession to the grave, and the employees at the grave were professional and efficient. If you've never been there, Forest Lawn is full of trees, lakes, and historic memorials - a lovely, serene and transcendent place. I am glad mom and pop are there, together again.

We are very pleased with the perpetual care Forest Lawn Cemetery provides for our father and now our mother as well. We received a video recording of when the Committal Carillon rang to honor our mother upon arrival to the cemetery. We were very touched by the tribute. We thank the Forest Lawn Cemetery staff for their kind care and professionalism.

Forest Lawn has been absolutely incredible to work with during this very difficult time. The process of the situation has been very uplifting. From the ringing of the bell as we entered the cemetery, to the cleanliness of the resting place for my parents. All top notch. What touch me most was the text messages I received from Forest Lawn (Elizabeth) that helped ease my mind that my parents new home was the place to be for them. They are being taken care of and have one of the best places in Buffalo to call their home. Thank you Forest Lawn for lifting me up during some of our saddest days.

Very large, beautiful and historic cemetery. We had an unusual situation, in that some of my late wife’s. Siblings and cousins had made claim on unused plots that had been bought by their Great great great grandfather in the 1850’s. Because prior documents had proved her relationship, it was a very smooth process . The people I and my daughter dealt with at Forest Lawn couldn’t have been more helpful. To State the obvious, this piece of land is absolutely gorgeous

Forest Lawn provided a very professional and gracious funeral for my mom as the bells were ringing as her hearse entered into the cemetery on her way to entombment in the mausoleum that she will now be next to my dad. The staff was courteous and offered condolences and help to the family we had attending.

“Eerie, humbling, historic, amazing!”First off, walking around a cemetery isn't for everyone, regardless of how amazing it may be. HOWEVER, if you find the enormous "wealth" in the history of 200+yr old cemeteries and you are in Buffalo, you have to stop by! Most of the founders of Buffalo and the surrounding area's are buried there, not to mention Chiefs from Seneca Nation and a US President! Not knowing much of Buffalo's history prior to my first visit, I learned so much in the 3 hrs that I was there (get a map, the place is HUGE!!).
Deborah Coley
Forest Lawn Cemetery has done an amazing job for the Homegoing of both of my parents and my youngest brother. I cannot express the compassion my family felt while at the gravesite. Probably the largest and most historical cemetery in the City of Buffalo, it is well worth to pay for an official Sunday guided bus tour, or just go exploring on your own whenever you like. You could easily spend several months exploring the monuments in there and still have many monuments to look at.
Sean Green
The Forest Lawn Cemetery works hand in hand with the funeral homes to ensure that your loved ones final resting place is to your liking, clean and trash free and even in the winters of Buffalo the roads and walkways are clear

It was beautiful the way we mean my family was treated why laiding my husband to rest. he was placed at the foot of his mother the grave digger took pictures of the whole ceremony for me and felt my pain also. I would like to say thank you all for all you done.

My grandfather, Alfred H. Burt was born in 1864. When he married, he purchased our family plots in Forest Lawn, Buffalo. When my son Alex and I flew my father's casket from California to New York in 1986, we were strengthened by the welcoming staff. I was awed by the majestic beauty of the sweeping grounds. And now...my beautiful son has slipped away from a second stroke. That wasn't supposed to be, and the staff at Forest Lawn, Buffalo, cradled my broken heart with patient compassion, handled legalities with unparalleled professionalism and met his arrival with dignity and the promise of perpetual carre.I remain forever grateful and know that when my time comes, my remains can be entrusted to their competent care in a final resting place.Jacqueline Burt,

Christina Rinehart
Forestlawn Cemetery is the most beautiful place. Both of my parents have been laid to rest in the Serenity Mausoleum and my husband and I also have a spot there. As far as picking out a final resting place, the staff was wonderful in assisting us.Forestlawn is not just a cemetery though. So many famous people are buried there. There is a lot of history. The cemetery tours are so interesting and there is also a field guide available to purchase that maps out where people of note were buried and unique monuments.
Megan
MICHAEL PALAZZO
We are very pleased with the perpetual care Forest Lawn Cemetery provides for our father and now our mother as well. We received a video recording of when the Committal Carillon rang to honor our mother upon arrival to the cemetery. We were very touched by the tribute. We thank the Forest Lawn Cemetery staff for their kind care and professionalism.
Pat Marks
Forest Lawn has been absolutely incredible to work with during this very difficult time. The process of the situation has been very uplifting. From the ringing of the bell as we entered the cemetery, to the cleanliness of the resting place for my parents. All top notch. What touch me most was the text messages I received from Forest Lawn (Elizabeth) that helped ease my mind that my parents new home was the place to be for them. They are being taken care of and have one of the best places in Buffalo to call their home. Thank you Forest Lawn for lifting me up during some of our saddest days.
Paul Battaglia
Forest Lawn cemetery in Buffalo NY is a beautiful final resting place for our loved ones. I have several aunts and uncles there. It’s comforting for my family to know they are together in such a wonderful and natural environment. The staff at Forest Lawn are also very professional, caring, and customer focused. I highly recommend them.
The Oracle
I love it here. Great for a walk, run or photography. Very scenic views. The cemetery is safe and clean. Security will escort you out around 430 as the cemetery closes at 5.
Mark Morris
Even though it was a sad gathering of family and friends, it was nice to have everything prepared for our ceremony. Also the bells ringing as we past through the cemetery entrance was very nice.
Judith Postelle
Celebrated my birthday by visiting several of my friend sites, and photograph. Office has moved we had to take the blue line to find office. Things would have been quicken, if the main (street address) was attached. That was the downside. 😷
Amy Roberts
Not only is it full of Buffalo history, it's beautiful too. You can actually spend an entire day here, looking at not only the gorgeous headstones but also the beauty of nature through the cemetery.

Jennifer Smith thank you so much for all your support and helping our family during this tough time. You are caring, passionate, empathetic and knowledgeable about your job. May God Bless you to continue to help others as you helped us.

I did not hate this place. I recommend a Name date plot search be added for when the office is closed. I came back from California to see my mother but couldn't. The place is beautiful. That's why we chose it in 1991 as a final resting place for our Mother.
Ray
Due to COVD-19 there were certain regulations that were unexpected by our family, but Forest Lawn was more than gracious and aware of our families needs. The set up was beautiful. Thank you so much.

One of the prettiest cemeteries in the country, Forest Lawn has an unusually high number of famous "residents". Two of the more well-known sites are Frank Lloyd Wright's Blue Sky Mausoleum and the gravesite of President Millard Fillmore.
Edilmar de Barros
I think they should put Miss Kristen Marie Pfaff on the list of memorable people who lived intensely and are loved by many others, and still move strangers from distant lands
Cinara Marquis
Beautiful place to bike and walk. Would recommend for a scenic evening. You can feed geese and ducks in the summertime, a very nice place to be.

You don't even have to go into this place to appreciate it! You can just drive by it and really soak it in. Massive old graves with huge statues on the front of them or on top of them. This graveyard is very old and cool looking.
Sara Brown
Very large, beautiful and historic cemetery. I went to visit the grave of a very dear friend who passed away several years ago and the nice woman at the visitors center went above and beyond helping me to find his grave site. I wish the weather was better so I could have spent more time exploring this place.
Larry Fobbs
Walking through the cemetery and checking out the Stones, Architecture, and flowers is a pleasant experience. You will be amazed as to how many famous people have been buried there. This piece of local history is a must-see place to visit.
Cinder Block
Forest Lawn Cemetery is an amazing place! We spent about 3 hours there and barely scratched the surface. We didn't make it to any of the famous graves because we were enthralled with the non-famous ones - so many gorgeous & creative memorials. Will definitely be going back
James Kreuzer
We had an unusual situation, in that some of my late wife’s. Siblings and cousins had made claim on unused plots that had been bought by their Great great great grandfather in the 1850’s. Because prior documents had proved her relationship, it was a very smooth process . The people I and my daughter dealt with at Forest Lawn couldn’t have been more helpful. To State the obvious, this piece of land is absolutely gorgeous
Micah Flack
Very nice place to walk around. Lovely views. Very interesting burial spots.
Andrew Bertini
Forest Lawn provided a very professional and gracious funeral for my mom as the bells were ringing as her hearse entered into the cemetery on her way to entombment in the mausoleum that she will now be next to my dad. The staff was courteous and offered condolences and help to the family we had attending.
Crystal H
The staff was exceptional with compassionate care for my family. They even followed up with calls and texts to check on us. I highly recommend Forest Lawn Buffalo as a resting place for a family member.

Over the years, Forest Lawn has been entrusted as the final resting place for so many family members and friends. The feeling of serenity and calm, wrapped in beautiful surroundingsassures me my loved ones are resting comfortably. What a heavenly place to spend eternity.

I would like to personally thank everyone who assisted our family during very difficult times. Again, thank you for your services and care! The Coley Family
