They were so good at helping me through my father’s passing. They even let social Security no about his passing for me. I didn’t have to make that call. Also they got with the Cemetery and had his military service arranged and got the preacher set up for me ,with all the other stuff I had to do. My 98-year-old mother passed away back in April 2024. E Alvin Small Funeral home was there to help us In every way to make her funeral as easy and memorable as it could be. When I met with Nicholas at the Funeral home he was willing to include my brother in with the process even though my brother lived over 90 miles away from the location. We placed my brother on speakerphone and Nicholas very professionally spoke with each of us as the need arose. He explained every step of what we were choosing to do in this process and answered all of our questions thoroughly. He was able to advise us on ways to cut cost as much as possible in this difficult economic time. On the actual day of the funeral, JJ and Victoria met us at the graveyard and helped this to be a smooth transition during our time of loss. And this is not the first funeral they have done for my family as they also buried my father, two stepfathers, several uncles and multiple aunts. Over the last 50 years they have helped to make this time as smooth as possible and were always helpful to my family. And they continue to be helpful, even though it has been a month since my mother passed. Thank you to everyone who works in this wonderful business!

Back in March my mother passed. I feel very fortunate to have received help from Victoria. From the process of retrieving my mother from the hospital to ensuring that my wishes for her were followed to the T. I can’t speak for the funeral home but the people that drive their hearse are not considerate (edited). Double parking the hearses and blocking the only entrance/exit. I did appreciate there were extenuating circumstances (double funeral), however, blocking an entire roadway in both directions is excessive. Regardless of the location (sacred)... if an emergency vehicle needed access would the same indifference arise? I have edited this review as my original was written in haste. Regardless, in the future it would be ideal if you respected the living while honoring those that passed. We had just finished paying our respects and were somber at the time. When dealing with a funeral home it’s never the best time and you would hope that those you are working with will be helpful and caring. I’m very happy to say that E. Alvin Small Funeral Home more than exceeded mine and my family’s expectations! From my first interaction with Josh to the funeral arrangements and then even to the billing every single piece was made as easy as possible. They made us feel as if we were part of the family and they wanted to ensure the passing of our loved one was handled with love and care. I absolutely love the staff at E Alvin Small funeral home in Colonial Heights. When you lose a loved one, it is a very difficult time and I lost my 26 year old son. I was devastated. Nick and his staff not only helped me make arrangements for him, but answered all of my questions and concerns without hesitation. They were there for us throughout the whole devastating experience. They were courteous, friendly and extremely supportive, even sending me a message not long ago checking to see how I was doing. If your loved one has a life insurance policy DO NOT PAY UPFRONT! Had anyone working there informed us of that we would've went that route. So I want to pass that information along to anyone looking to use them. Not only will the life insurance cut them a check directly but they will get things processed faster if done that way. On top of that lack of information provided they made several mistakes and honestly just didn't try when it came to honoring my father who had recently passed. The welcoming staff was rude and didn't familiarize themselves with the immediate family so every time I stepped outside I was greeted with signing my fathers guest book. They put the wrong picture on the memorial cards that were paid for. They never even played a picture slideshow that was paid for (they did refund that but took over a month for the refund to come). We felt very rushed through our time slot even though we finished with an hour left on our booking. The only semi positive thing I have to say is they did hear out our complaints and stated they would change word plays and policies to better accommodate in the future. But as someone whose first experience with a business like this and a death in this scale they were horrible. I highly recommend looking into other establishments in the area before considering this one. I have heard the petersburg branch is better but sadly our family went with this one and I feel were truly mistreated. Again they did "try" to rectify it by admitting there was more they could've done so hopefully this won't be the experience for future customers. Just overall especially if you're trying to do something non traditional save yourself the headache of working with them. I hope this helps someone.

My parents had moved to another state, and when my father passed away in 2020, it was an extremely stressful time, the staff could not have been more helpful and compassionate while helping to make the final arrangements. My mother just recently passed, and again, we received the same extraordinary, compassionate care starting with our very first call to finalize Mom’s service. I can not say enough about E. Alvin Small Funeral Home. Such a professional and caring family owned business. From the two young men that arrived that early morning to our primary contact (Nicholas)... everyone was kind and very attentive to our requests. There is so much extra they do to make your loved ones' transition a peaceful and truly beautiful celebration of life. From the care of your loved one to a flower notecard copied for you to keep and so much more. Every detail was impeccable. Losing my mom was beyond difficult and E. I had lost my mom after two years of taking care of her. I thought I had taken every legal step to make sure that I could get ahold of her money for her final expenses. I was so wrong. She had a bank that all that paperwork meant nothing. Alvin Small funeral home knew exactly how I was feeling and showed so much respect and kindness. My family has trusted our burial needs to E, Alvin Small’s Funeral Services since 2001. Most recently they provided compassionate care to my beloved husband and to my family. My husband had provided me with pre burial planning to help with what he knew would be a very difficult time. Johnwas well versed with the entire plan the morning we met with him. He offered suggestions with the Obituary and with preparation of a slideshow and music tribute for the visitation. The funeral home has everything to make putting together a tribute easy and very professional. We had a large gathering of friends and family and yet the accommodations the night of visitation were very comfortable. The actual service the following day was flawless. Everything was in place, alll our requests handled to our expectations. John was just a phone call away when we had questions and close by for the actual services.I received a follow up call by Elizabeth several weeks later to see how I was doing. All these special touches were delivered with kindness and compassion. I never felt like my husband’s services were just another burial. They honored him as if he were a part of their family. I highly recommend E Alvin Small to be a part of your family’s most important time in saying a final good bye.

The funeral industry is notorious for being predatory, and as most family owned homes are purchased by large corporations, it has gotten worse. E. Alvin Small Funeral Home is NOT one of those. I found them after googling for funeral homes in the Hopewell area, and I was encouraged that they complied with FTC guidelines about posting ALL of their fees on their website. I don't have a lot of money so cost was very important especially since it was a sudden death. We met with Lou, and I cannot thank him enough for helping us through the process before we picked them, and after. Lou and later Nick answered my billion questions, and my mom's questions nicely and patiently. I was also helped by Victoria during the day of the service when she helped us add my stepbrother's ashes to my stepfather's casket. It meant a lot to me that she was so nice, and helpful when I asked her to help, and I'm sure she'll become an incredible funeral director. My mom was so happy with how E.Alvin Small worked with us that we will likely return next year to setup her pre-need there.

Alvin Small’s Funeral Home in Colonial Heights met with my step- daughter and me and told us the steps involved in a sympathetic, patient, and compassionate manner. So appreciated! Another aspect that I really appreciated was that they do not rush your visiting hours and funeral —making it easier for my step-son and granddaughter to get to Virginia from Florida. I can’t speak for the funeral home but the people that drive their hearse are not considerate (edited). Double parking the hearses and blocking the only entrance/exit. I did appreciate there were extenuating circumstances (double funeral), however, blocking an entire roadway in both directions is excessive. Regardless of the location (sacred)... if an emergency vehicle needed access would the same indifference arise? I have edited this review as my original was written in haste. Regardless, in the future it would be ideal if you respected the living while honoring those that passed. We had just finished paying our respects and were somber at the time. When dealing with a funeral home it’s never the best time and you would hope that those you are working with will be helpful and caring. I’m very happy to say that E. Alvin Small Funeral Home more than exceeded mine and my family’s expectations! They were so wonderful with everything and I mean everything! They came to our home to get her and so professional and sincere! Then the next day meeting them for an appointment. I absolutely love the staff at E Alvin Small funeral home in Colonial Heights. When you lose a loved one, it is a very difficult time and I lost my 26 year old son. I was devastated. If your loved one has a life insurance policy DO NOT PAY UPFRONT! Had anyone working there informed us of that we would've went that route. So I want to pass that information along to anyone looking to use them. Not only will the life insurance cut them a check directly but they will get things processed faster if done that way. On top of that lack of information provided they made several mistakes and honestly just didn't try when it came to honoring my father who had recently passed. The welcoming staff was rude and didn't familiarize themselves with the immediate family so every time I stepped outside I was greeted with signing my fathers guest book. They put the wrong picture on the memorial cards that were paid for. They never even played a picture slideshow that was paid for (they did refund that but took over a month for the refund to come). We felt very rushed through our time slot even though we finished with an hour left on our booking. The only semi positive thing I have to say is they did hear out our complaints and stated they would change word plays and policies to better accommodate in the future. But as someone whose first experience with a business like this and a death in this scale they were horrible. I highly recommend looking into other establishments in the area before considering this one. I have heard the petersburg branch is better but sadly our family went with this one and I feel were truly mistreated. Again they did "try" to rectify it by admitting there was more they could've done so hopefully this won't be the experience for future customers. Just overall especially if you're trying to do something non traditional save yourself the headache of working with them. I hope this helps someone.

My husband had provided me with pre burial planning to help with what he knew would be a very difficult time. Johnwas well versed with the entire plan the morning we met with him. He offered suggestions with the Obituary and with preparation of a slideshow and music tribute for the visitation. The funeral home has everything to make putting together a tribute easy and very professional. We had a large gathering of friends and family and yet the accommodations the night of visitation were very comfortable. The actual service the following day was flawless. Everything was in place, alll our requests handled to our expectations. John was just a phone call away when we had questions and close by for the actual services.I received a follow up call by Elizabeth several weeks later to see how I was doing. All these special touches were delivered with kindness and compassion. I never felt like my husband’s services were just another burial. They honored him as if he were a part of their family. I highly recommend E Alvin Small to be a part of your family’s most important time in saying a final good bye.

The funeral industry is notorious for being predatory, and as most family owned homes are purchased by large corporations, it has gotten worse. E. Alvin Small Funeral Home is NOT one of those. I found them after googling for funeral homes in the Hopewell area, and I was encouraged that they complied with FTC guidelines about posting ALL of their fees on their website. I don't have a lot of money so cost was very important especially since it was a sudden death. We met with Lou, and I cannot thank him enough for helping us through the process before we picked them, and after. Lou and later Nick answered my billion questions, and my mom's questions nicely and patiently. I was also helped by Victoria during the day of the service when she helped us add my stepbrother's ashes to my stepfather's casket. It meant a lot to me that she was so nice, and helpful when I asked her to help, and I'm sure she'll become an incredible funeral director. My mom was so happy with how E.Alvin Small worked with us that we will likely return next year to setup her pre-need there.

Another aspect that I really appreciated was that they do not rush your visiting hours and funeral —making it easier for my step-son and granddaughter to get to Virginia from Florida. After asking what the front and back was to my mothers dress they still put it on backwards. Presented her to my dad and would have never changed it unless I called to raise hell about it. Stressing me out thinking they would not be able to fix it considering that dress was meaningful to us. Afterwords she was cremated was supposed to have been split three ways but the day of the service she was not they had to take her back to the funeral home to split her three ways then bury. Even though we clearly told the woman we wanted that in the very beginning. I really didn’t care for what her name was or who she was other than the fact that this woman who works there handled all of this very poorly. No family should have to stress over those type of things during such times I’m very disappointed. There’s no amount of apologies what’s done was done.

My Husband William Hall passed away this February during the ice storm. We called Small Funeral Home at 10:30pm and Lou Smith reacted quickly to get him transported from the hospital to the funeral home before the next ice storm coming in at 1:00 that morning (all this during a power outage) I could not be more pleased with my whole experience dealing with Lou, Bryan and Taylor.
